Louis Ray

Louis began his 50-year oilfield career in 1970 with Shell in their East Texas fields (Quitman and Kilgore), where he spent his first 25 years in roles ranging from roustabout to senior operations specialist.
During that time, he operated one of Shell’s first three deployed Mobile Delta System vans for on-site dynamometer and diagnostics of rod pumped wells, and was involved in the evolution from strip-chart recorders to PC-based equipment for generating on-site dynamometer cards. He oversaw the deployment of the first rod pump controllers in those fields, and was responsible for training Shell operating personnel on rod pump optimization. He then spent a year and a half with Shell in the Permian Basin, where he was first exposed to remote optimization software, the predecessor to Weatherford’s LOWIS host software.

Louis retired from Shell in late 1996 when Shell and Amoco merged to form Altura. Louis then joined Weatherford in early 1997 and spent the next 20 serving as a Senior Trainer and Field Optimization Specialist. He provided field and classroom training on a variety of subjects ranging from the basics of rod pumping and rod pumping optimization, dynamometer card interpretation to detailed rod lift analysis using Weatherford’s host and design software. Over the course of his career, Louis has taught thousands of people in the United States, Canada and 13 other international countries on the benefits and use of rod lift optimization hardware and software and interpretation of the calculated downhole dynamometer pump card.
After leaving Weatherford in 2017 Louis formed The Dyno Master, LLC to continue to provide on-demand basic rod pumping and dynamometer card interpretation training. Louis has also served as a presenter for the SWPSC and the ALRDC. Louis is now retired and enjoys playing golf and being a part of the local community of his hometown – Winnsboro, Texas.
