How will digital tools transform the well design process to reduce planning and cycle time while increasing well productivity and reliability?

Forum participants will use breakout sessions to identify what requirements will enable a seamless process to design for the full lifecycle of a well and how these digital tools will interact with the planning lifecycle, changes to design requirements, and the underlying data needs. They are invited to dream big about how current emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), large language processing, and machine learning will impact the well design process.

Today the industry has multiple parties and systems that must be integrated into operational plans, creating inefficiencies across the planning space.

In Session 4, the following questions will be addressed.

• How might digital well planning tools enhance the synergy between well design and operation?
• How can we collaborate to streamline well planning from early feasibility through execution by leveraging digital tools?

Through breakout sessions, we'll discuss the vision for digital well planning a few years into the future and how we can get there.

In recent years, we have seen the rise of technologies designed to orchestrate the information flow between planning and execution, dynamic operational envelopes as decision support, and control system integrations, and the rise of robotic machinery. 

Let's explore these questions.

• what does the future execution model look like for the different types of operations such as drilling, completions, and interventions?
• what are the enablers to realize the identified value from the digital tools and technologies?
• how do we develop trust moving forward with data-driven systems and automation?

Everyone understands the importance of assuring that operations follow the plan and that plans are designed in compliance with company standards, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) stakeholder expectations, and regulations. 

However, as complexity continues to grow, assurance processes remain largely manual, leaving a difficult gap to close between what is expected and what can be accomplished with present workflows and tools. Technology offers exciting opportunities to streamline our workflows to more inclusively integrate assurance and change management with our requirements and regulations.

This session will explore what a "perfect" world in this space would look like and how we could get there.

In Session 7, participants will revisit the aspirational roadmap and enablers that emerged from the previous Sessions 1-6. Next, they will break out into groups to reflect on the principles of integration needed to pull it all together as a system.

The following questions will guide discussion around the future of operating this envisioned digital future given its complex and ever-changing nature.

• What are the gaps today and the future foundation to support digital integration of well construction systems such as design, operations, assurance, and data?
• How do we capture the knowledge and interactions in future contexts and over time?

• How do we turn knowledge and technology into a practical execution plan?

• How do we make more integrated decisions?

• Is our current treatment of systems and our paradigm of integration adequate? If not, how so, and what are the alternatives?

Exploring these questions is key to “pulling it all together” across subsea, drilling, completions, and intervention.
