Technical Session 7: Infrastructure and Cloud Computing

05 Feb 2025
Grand Ballroom
Technical Session

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the upstream oil and gas sector, moving beyond niche applications to becoming a cornerstone of operational excellence and competitive advantage. However, AI does not function in isolation; it requires a robust and integrated ecosystem tailored to the unique demands of the upstream industry. This ecosystem encompasses reliable and secured connectivity, on-premises EDGE computing units to support mission-critical operations in remote and offshore locations, secure cloud environments, and data centers. It also includes advanced applications, software, and platforms capable of integrating, aggregating, and analysing vast and varied datasets—from seismic surveys and drilling logs to real-time production data—unlocking actionable insights that drive efficiency and decision-making.

This session will explore the complex dimensions of scaling AI in the upstream oil and gas context, addressing not only the technical challenges—such as data management, model robustness, and substantial computational requirements—but also the critical role of the supporting infrastructure and sophisticated digital tools. Additionally, it will emphasise the importance of robust governance and ethical frameworks in ensuring AI deployment aligns with the sector's highest standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance. Governance frameworks must ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability, while ethical considerations guide the responsible use of AI, addressing issues such as bias, privacy, and social responsibility.

Through in-depth case studies and best practices, this session will provide a strategic roadmap for stakeholders in the upstream sector to effectively leverage AI’s transformative potential. Participants will gain insights into developing an integrated ecosystem where AI can thrive—fuelled by technological innovation, advanced data analytics, secure infrastructure, and an unwavering commitment to safety, ethics, and sustainability.
