Session 2: Technologies to Enable Marginal and Mature Fields Operation and Development
Session Managers: Sorawee Rongdechprateep, PTTEP, M Sahir Ahmad Shatiry, PETRONAS; Jan Niuerwerf, SNF
The development and operation of marginal and mature oil fields present unique challenges that necessitate innovative technological solutions to ensure economic viability and efficient resource extraction. Advanced technologies such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, including thermal injection, gas injection, and chemical flooding, play a pivotal role in maximising the extraction from these fields. Additionally, the integration of digital tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning enables predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring, significantly reducing operational costs and downtime. Robotics and automation technologies also contribute by performing tasks that are hazardous for humans, improving safety and efficiency. Furthermore, the use of 4D seismic imaging technology allows for better understanding and management of reservoir dynamics over time, facilitating more informed decision-making in field development. These technologies together create a synergistic approach that not only extends the life of mature fields but also enhances the economic feasibility of developing marginal reserves.
