Session 6: Integrated Asset Life Extension and Management Strategies for Maximising the Lifecycle Value of Surface Facilities in Marginal and Mature Field Operations

07 Aug 2024
Merbau 2, Level 12
Technical Sessions

Session Managers: Izham Ruslim, Jadestone; M Zhafran Sulaiman, PETRONAS; Marlina Salim, PETRONAS; Hafiz Azlam, PETRONAS

This session calls on industry players to discuss, share ideas and recommendations for other industry practitioners who are embarking on field facility Asset Life Extension (ALE) strategy for marginal and mature field operations. The session aims to explore novel technologies and methodologies that can be applied for operation, maintenance as well as inspection and asset integrity activities of the marginal and mature field operations entering end of life phase, as the asset gears up into and embark on late field optimisation and life extension activities.

The presenter is invited to share how these advancements and best practices have helped them better understand the asset condition and achieve cost optimisation in facility life extension studies and activities. This includes lessons learned and success stories of successful facility ALE implementation, covering aspects such as strategic planning for cost-effective solutions for end-of-life optimisation implementation.

Additionally, this session will address preservation strategies conducted by the operators for future exploration and nearby development which is planned to utilise the existing and ageing facilities. Presenters can also share any interesting strategies to gear up facilities for mothball and decommissioning activities.

The session topic may include but not be limited to:

  • Operations – Changes in the operating philosophy where applications of fit for purpose, run to end concept and fail concept to improve the Unit Production Cost and make PSC healthier to operate until end of field life. Discussing the impact of cost optimisation , which in certain scenarios, the economic life has been extended and urge for better term in new PSC or PSC extension.
  • Maintenance – Application of a well-suited asset maintenance strategy for mature and marginal field facilities, with the aim to maximise profitability, reduce cost and maintaining all barriers. Exploration of new technologies in risk-based, condition-based and predictive maintenance to maintain high uptime and maintain risk at ALARP.
  • Inspection & Asset Integrity – Advancements in inspection and asset integrity technology, improvement in risk-based inspection methodologies and how these have helped develop a better understanding of late life asset condition primed for asset life extension and preparation for end-of-life activities.
  • Strategies – Key challenges in implementing marginal and mature field facility asset life extension and sharing of facility ALE success stories. Sharing lessons learned and recommendations for improvement of marginal and mature field operations integrated life extension strategy & planning. Case study on innovative Strategic Approach for Economical End-of-Life Execution through Late-Stage Planning.
