The Evolved Drilling Landscape

The drilling landscape has evolved significantly, addressing the complexities of aged formations, environmentally sensitive locations, and the imperative for sustainable solutions. Innovations in drilling and completion fluids, as well as cementing, are central to this transformation. Advanced fluid designs are crucial for overcoming wellbore stability challenges, maintaining well integrity, minimizing formation damage, and maximizing productivity while reducing environmental impact.

Sustainability in drilling is achieved through several key initiatives. Environmental protection is prioritized by minimizing the footprint of drilling activities, reducing emissions, waste, and contamination, and preserving natural habitats and biodiversity. Resource efficiency is enhanced by using water, energy, and materials more efficiently to reduce waste and extend the lifespan of drilling sites. Economic viability is ensured by keeping operations cost-effective and financially sustainable, which allows for continuous investment in new technologies. Social responsibility is addressed by ensuring safe working conditions, respecting local communities, and contributing to social development. Maintaining well integrity is crucial for preventing leaks and failures, protecting groundwater resources, and reducing contamination risks.

Digitalisation plays a pivotal role in enhancing these efforts by integrating real-time data analytics and predictive maintenance to improve precision, efficiency, and sustainability. Advanced waste management practices ensure wells are delivered within technical limits, maintaining well integrity throughout the lifecycle. These advancements in fluid innovation, digitalization, and sustainable practices are transforming the industry. By focusing on environmental protection, resource efficiency, economic viability, social responsibility, and well integrity, the future of drilling is set to achieve enhanced well performance and robust environmental stewardship, driving the industry toward a sustainable and efficient energy landscape.

COUNTDOWN TO THE EVENT!

ATTENDING THIS WORKSHOP SUPPORTS THE E&P INDUSTRY

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit organisation. Income from this event will be invested back into SPE to support many other Society programmes.

When you attend an SPE event, you help provide even more opportunities for industry professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence. Scholarships, certification, the Distinguished Lecturer programme, and SPE’s energy education programme Energy4me® are just a few examples of programmes supported by SPE.
